Fertilizing

In order to have a healthy lawn it is important to make sure that it has all of the nutrients that it needs, particularly during the growing season.

Benefits of Fertilizing

A lawn with the right nutrients will provide you with the following benefits:

·          A stronger ability to resist weeds

·           Protection from pest infestations

·           Stronger resilience to traffic

·           A proper pH maintenance

·           Adequate nitrogen provision for shoot and leaf growth as   well as a deeper green color

·           Proper phosphorous amounts to establish seedlings and encourage root growth

·           Proper levels of potassium for increased tolerance to heat as well as cold weather

·           Increased recovery from the winter when spring arrives

·           Improved establishment of a new lawn and increased maintenance of established lawns

Not All Lawns Need the Same Fertilizer

It should be understood that not all lawns are the same and as a result have different fertilizer needs. The two most important factors in determining when you should apply fertilizer are the amount of rainfall received in your local area and the local temperature. When your grass reaches the peak growing season, you will also need to increase your fertilizer applications because grass typically requires more nutrients the more it grows. You can determine how much fertilizer your lawn needs and in what variety by performing a soil test. This will tell you precisely how much phosphorous, nitrogen and potassium that your lawn requires.

The Ingredients of Fertilizer

The three primary ingredients used in fertilizer for lawns are phosphorous (P), nitrogen (N) and potassium (K). They are known as micronutrients and are required in fairly large amounts. You will typically see them expressed on lawn fertilizer packaging as N-P-K. Fertilizers are available with different percentages of each nutrient.
